Same car, different names: rebadged cars around the world

Shop for a small Toyota in South Africa and you might buy a Starlet, which is built by Suzuki in India and sold elsewhere as the Suzuki Baleno. Car makers rename and rebadge models all the time, and it can make the same car look like several different ones.

Why the same car gets different names

  • Badge engineering (rebadging): two makers share one car and sell it under their own brands. Toyota and Suzuki's partnership is a big current example: Suzuki builds cars in India that Toyota sells with its own badges in India and Africa.
  • Local names: a name that works in one country can be taken, trademarked or awkward in another, so the same car is renamed. The Nissan X-Trail is sold as the Rogue in the US.
  • Old generations kept alive: a factory keeps building an older design for a price-sensitive market after the rest of the world moves on. The VW Polo Vivo, built in South Africa, is based on the previous-generation Polo.
  • Same name, different car: the reverse also happens. The Hyundai Grand i10 sold in India and Africa is a different body from the i10 sold in Europe, and the 2024 Ford Explorer in Europe is an electric car unrelated to the American SUV.

Why it matters when you compare specs

A rebadged car usually shares its engine, dimensions and most of its specification with the original, so reviews and owner experience carry across. Local versions can still differ in engines, safety equipment, suspension tuning and warranty, so check the details for your market. A car that only shares a name, on the other hand, may have nothing in common at all.

How to check what you're looking at

  1. Look at the VIN: its first three characters identify the actual manufacturer and country. Our VIN lookup decodes it.
  2. Compare dimensions and engine codes with the suspected original. A rebadge matches almost exactly.
  3. Search our site by the local name: the search box on the all cars page knows the local names and takes you to the global model.
